Keystone Jack Punch-Down (T568A / T568B)

Terminate a wall jack with a 110 punch-down tool: seat each conductor into the IDC channel, then punch and trim

Punch-Down vs Crimp

  • 1RJ45 crimp terminates the free end of a cable into a plug, used for patch cables.
  • 2110 punch-down terminates a cable into a keystone jack or patch panel, used for permanent wall runs.
  • 3The 110 punch-down tool seats the wire into the IDC (Insulation Displacement Contact) channel AND trims the excess in one stroke.
  • 4The blade faces away from the wire being kept. The cut end is on the blade side.
  • 5Real jacks print BOTH T568A and T568B color maps. Always follow one standard consistently end-to-end.

Termination Procedure

  • 1Strip ~1 inch of outer jacket. Do not nick individual conductors.
  • 2Untwist each pair minimally. Keep the twist as close to the jack as possible. Over-untwisting increases Near-End Crosstalk (NEXT).
  • 3Lay each conductor into its color-coded IDC channel per the chosen standard (A or B).
  • 4Punch down each wire: tool blade faces outward (toward the wire tail). This seats the IDC contact AND trims the excess in one motion.
  • 5Snap the protective cap onto the jack, then plug a patch cord in to verify connectivity.

C Terminate the Jack

1

Strip the jacket (~1 inch)

In Progress

Score and remove approximately 1 inch of the outer jacket using a cable stripper. Do not nick or score any of the 4 twisted pairs inside.

2

Untwist & fan pairs (keep twists close to the jack)

Locked

Untwist each of the 4 pairs just enough to fan the 8 conductors into their IDC channels. Critical: over-untwisting increases near-end crosstalk (NEXT) and can cause a cable to fail Category certification. Keep untwisted length under 1/2 inch.

3

Choose the standard and seat each conductor

Locked

Select the wiring standard specified by your mission. Then click a wire chip to select it, and click the matching IDC slot on the jack to seat it. The jack's color labels show both T568A and T568B. Use the standard you chose. Click a filled slot to remove and re-seat.

4

Punch down all 8 conductors

Locked

Each conductor is now resting in its IDC channel. Apply the 110 punch-down tool to seat the wire into the IDC contact and trim the excess tail. The blade faces outward (toward the excess tail). One firm strike per conductor.

5

Snap the cap and verify
