Cable Types

Straight Both ends SAME standard (B+B or A+A). Use between unlike devices: PC to switch, PC to wall jack.
Crossover One end T568A, other end T568B. Use between like devices: PC to PC, switch to switch (legacy, before Auto-MDIX).

Termination Procedure

  • 1Strip ~1 inch of outer jacket with a cable stripper. Do not nick the conductors.
  • 2Untwist each of the 4 pairs and fan all 8 wires flat.
  • 3Arrange wires in pin order 1–8 per your chosen standard.
  • 4Trim conductors even and seat firmly into the RJ45 plug.
  • 5Crimp the connector with a crimp tool to lock the contacts.
  • 6Test both ends with a cable tester. All 8 LEDs must light in order.

C Build the Cable

1

Strip the jacket (~1 inch)

In Progress

Use a cable stripper to remove the outer jacket without nicking any conductors. Expose approximately 1 inch of the twisted pairs.

2

Untwist & fan the 4 pairs

Locked

Carefully untwist each pair and spread all 8 conductors flat. Work close to the jacket to preserve the twist as far as possible.

3

Arrange conductors into pins 1–8

Locked

For each end: (1) choose the standard, (2) click a wire chip to select it, then click an empty pin slot to place it. Click a filled slot to remove the wire and return it to the palette.

End A

End A: pin 1 is LEFT
Wire palette: click to select, then click a pin:
